By this point in the month we’ve already heard them all – losing weight, going to the gym more often, being more organized. 2013 does not have to be another one of “those” years. Spice it up with some new resolutions that you haven’t tried before, and that are still beneficial to your wellness inside and out! Borrow any one of these resolutions and add some color to the typical “what are your New Year’s resolutions?” conversation!

Drink more water. While this may seem obvious, it is important to make a real commitment to water as it will affect many areas of your life when it comes to staying healthy – make your workouts better, make your skin look clearer, and keep your metabolism healthy! While it may seem like an annoying habit at first, drinking water in between meals and using iPhone apps that track your water progress can help you integrate hydration into your daily routine effortlessly.

Swap texting for actual face time. And no, I don’t mean a Facetime app. Instead of spending all day on your phone, resolve to decrease your text time by scheduling actual catch-up sessions with friends and loved ones! This way, when you do get to see each other you have more meaningful and in depth conversations. Hearing someones voice and connecting to someone through their nonverbal communication is part of what makes relationships fulfilling.

Get more sleep. According to the infamous Dr. Oz, women need at least 7 and a half hours of sleep each night, and men need 8, minimum! Just adding a few more hours of “beauty sleep” can help you to boost your immune system, lose weight and maintain a healthy metabolism, and help you maintain focus and clarity throughout the day. To optimize yourself, make sure that you are allowing enough time for sleep by going to bed at a reasonable hour. Also, studies have shown that it is more beneficial to set one alarm rather than using the snooze button, so you can get the most sleep out of your resting periods!

Schedule date nights. Make sure that none of your loved ones get the cold shoulder this year and cultivate your most fulfilling relationships by setting aside a date night once per week. Whether it is with your significant other or with your best friend, make a pledge to go out and do something one night each week. Even if it is just taking a walk and absorbing the local sights, the one on one time will help your grow a deeper bond with that special someone.

What do you think?

I agree with this blog so much I think we all try to make New Year Resolutions about losing weight, but never follow through. I think that is why I don’t make one, I feel like I would be setting myself up for failure. However, I think trying to make changes like you said in the blog about drinking more water, have more face time with people versus texting, and get more sleep (I like this one) you are more likely to follow through with it. I think this is great advice is for everyone not just college students! =)
