As college girls, we know that beauty comes from our own inner happiness and confidence. Though it seems easy to get caught up in a schedule and let the day take control, there are ways to regain our sense of self and reconnect throughout the day to boost our mood and let ourselves shine.

Light candles

Often underestimated but rarely rivaled, candles hold a mysterious but striking power for creating a mood as well as boosting it.

The psychology behind candles is that they engage multiple senses and bring us to the present moment, leaving us with a feeling of contentment and peace. The candle’s smell, look, and feeling of warmth combine to enhance your atmosphere – just make sure to watch the candle and blow it out accordingly as they can be fire hazards.

Dance

I’m not kidding! Pick a song you know you can’t help but dance to, whatever that is for you. Some salsa beats? Go for it. Throwbacks like Genie In A Bottle? Totally respect that. Whatever gets you moving, put on a song or two that will remind you that you can have fun and connect with your inner sense of creativity and expression at any moment. Spontaneous actions are like mini adventures, and can be had at any place and any time if you have the right mindset for it.

Spritz yourself with perfume

Disclaimer: without going overboard. Sometimes all it takes for an instant mood lift is to feel refreshed, and one quick way to do that is with a few spritzes of your favorite perfume. When you smell pretty, you feel pretty, and when you feel pretty you’re ready to take back your mood and conquer the day.

Eat fruit with a little sugar

Fruit is a great, healthy, and natural way to boost your sugar intake and give you a little pick-me-up during the day. Wash and cut up larger fruit like strawberries, sprinkle with a little sugar, and you have your new mood right in a bowl. Fruit also gives us energy and antioxidants, so it’s a guilt-free way to nourish your body, and in doing so, nourish your soul as well.

Write or draw

Give yourself a minute to spontaneously create something beautiful. Sometimes when we feel laggy during the day, we’re really just feeling disconnected from ourselves or we feel dissonance toward our creative mind.

Find a sentence in a book, and incorporate it into a short story. See where you can go with it – make it funny, sad, or poetic, wherever your mood takes you.

Look around and notice the beauty in a scene that you’ve seen a million times but may have overlooked, and then try to bring out what makes that scene beautiful in your own little doodle. It doesn’t have to be good, don’t judge yourself. It’s yours, and every piece of art you create is beautiful.

In either case, you’re really just drawing your attention back to the present moment – like a creative form of meditation.
