Whether classes started for you weeks ago or just this week, it’s never too late to get the most out of the first month of school – everyone is excited to be back, there is great energy in the air, and people are optimistic about the year to come. Read on for a few ways to make this your best year yet! I’ve been the new girl a few times, and these are the tried and true methods I have used to get to know not only people at school but to get to know the school itself better too.

Make the most out of your activities fair. Usually every school has some kind of event in the first week or so of school where all of the campus clubs and organizations get together and try to promote themselves to new members, and it can be a great way to see all of the activities your school offers. On top of that, it can be a great way to meet people – these fairs are designed to be a meet-and-greet kind of atmosphere, and in that spirit don’t be afraid to go up to people and ask questions, whether you’re interested in the club they’re representing or not.

Keep your door open. Even if it feels lame, leave the door open when you can. Whether someone drops in or not, you’re putting a vibe out there that says you’re open and fun, and people remember that.

Go to events your school sponsors, or students promote. This falls under the see and be seen category. Whether you go to events that your school puts on, or you’re going to events at bars put on by other students, staying involved is a great way to meet a wide variety of people quickly.

Don’t be a stranger in class. Always try to make at least two friends in each class if you don’t know anyone in it, and not just to text for homework or syllabus questions. While it can be tempting to just take a seat in the back, take your notes and move on, you never know who you’ll run into at parties, or who you’ll have a class with again in the future. Having someone to chit chat with in class is a great way to make the class more enjoyable, not to mention you could meet a great friend too.

I personally on the first day of school saw someone sitting by themselves in the Dinning area called the QD here at my school and I just walked up to them and politely asked if I could sit down with them. They said yes and it turns out we are both majoring in the same things and have two classes together we eat lunch together almost every day now.
