Accessory trends change by the minute, so spending a tonne of money on chic accessories that won’t necessarily be in style next season may not be the best idea.  Just one statement accessory can make an outfit and lucky for us, there are plenty of places to get great, trendy accessories for low prices.  Here are my top five favourite summer accessory trends with some advice on how to wear them!

Scarves

Personally, I wear scarves all year round to add one more layer to an outfit to give it that “I-just-throw-things-on-and-look-awesome” vibe.  This seasons scarves are lightweight and light coloured – a lot of linen and silk.  For my recommendations, I picked a patterned one like the lust-worthy Erdem scarf, a bright blue linen scarf (turquoise is huge this summer too), and a white pashmina.  Pashminas can transition easily from summer to winter, and their versatility makes them worth the money.  Most of the time you can find them cheap!  I like the white because it can be thrown on over anything, and used in every season.  Wear a scarf with almost anything from a cute summer dress to a t-shirt and jeans.

Must: Buy.com ($38), Land’s End ($15), and Buy.com ($24)

Cocktail Rings

Cocktail rings are so cute, and easy to wear, despite what many think.  They come in almost every size and color, and there are both casual and more formal styles.  My favourite way to wear them is with a dress of any kind, but they have few limits.  When wearing such a statement-making accessory, keep other accessories to a minimum.  For example, pair a cocktail ring with a headband , but not a chunky necklace.

Must: Urban Outfitters ($18), Kohl’s ($22), and Macy’s ($25)

Plastic

Colorful plastic accessories are so cute and feminine.  Plastic was all over the runways from rain coats to bracelets to lucite clutch purses this year.  The plastic watch is very versatile, and many of them are oversized, in line with the growing menswear trend, but plastic is all over the place.  I picked a turquoise bangle because I think the color is gorgeous, but big bangles are like cocktail rings in that they should be worn by themselves.  I particularly like that plastic necklace with the white beads;  it is so vintage looking, and it can be add a little charm to any summer outfit.

Lust: MICHAEL Michael Kors Pink Plastic Watch ($225) at Macy’s.

Must: Amazon.com ($50), Farfetch.com ($39), and Kohl’s ($13)

Headbands

Headbands this season are textured and bejeweled.  Transitioning from last season’s ribbon/bow headbands (a la Blair Waldorf), they are a little less preppy, but equally as feminine.  Pearls create a vintage look (which has been a pattern in this post) that can not only accessorize a dress, but also just a casual top and skirt or shorts.  Pearls don’t have to be reserved for formal occasions only!  I really like the texture of the leather headband as a “wardrobe workhorse” type accessory, and the feathers are such a cute statement.  There are other feather headbands that stick out from the hair, but I like the more subtle, flat version better.

Lust: Jennifer Behr Grosgrain Headband with Pearls ($128) at jenniferbehr.com.

Must: Land’s End ($20), Forever 21 ($4), and Urban Outfitters ($28)

Fringe

With a little bit of a tribal look, fringe is in!  It is one of the easiest trends to wear this season.  I would love to have a fringe bag like the JJ Winters one, but for now, I work the fringe in some fringe sandals like the pair below.  Fringe is really casual, perfect for jeans or a shirtdress.  The belt is perfect to give a boxy dress more shape, and the bag reminds me of a music festival – a popular summer activity!

Must: Asos ($30), Guess ($58), and michaelstars.com ($68)
