Reader Molly asked us a great question recently:

I would love to see a post on how to layer clothing! It’s so cute but I can never figure out what pieces you can layer on top of one another and what colors go together.

Reader Irina agreed, adding:

…and the layering one seems like a good article too, perhaps like what patters/colors do or dont go together?

These are great questions, girls! Layering is a fashionable way to keep warm, but we can end up looking bulky if it’s not done right! Here are a few tips.

Avoid Tanks Over Tees

cami, tee

Girls, if you take away one thing from this article, let it be this: tank tops over tee-shirts are not cute. They look childish. Usually, the tee-shirt is a bright, solid colour, and the cami is a floral print, but even if they’re both muted, solid colors – please avoid this look!

Tanks with Tanks

Tank tops look super-cute when paired with other tank tops, especially when the lengths differ or if the cut of the front is different! Try out different combinations to see what works for you – there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to colour combinations or pattern mixing! Try mixing stripes with florals, two bright colours, or two neutrals for a fun look. If you have a super loud tank that you’re nervous about wearing, layer it with another, not-as-attention-grabbing tank over it.

striped tank, small floral print tank, red tank, purple tank, black tank, gray tank, large floral print tank, purple & black tank

Tanks Under Tees

I’m sure just about everyone has tried this look at least once – a tank top worn under a tee-shirt is an easy way to avoid showing too much in a thin or short top, and can also add a pop of color. This look is very basic!

Tees Over Long-Sleeved Tees

This look, to me, seems very athletic! This can be good for a “lazy day,” or even just to keep warm!

Vests

Vests are cute with everything. Tank tops, tee-shirts, long-sleeved tee-shirts: they all work with vests! Cropped vests, long vests, tight vests, loose vests…the list is endless! Use vests to add color and texture to your outfit.

Cardigans

They even look cute belted!

Cardigans are like the vest of the sweater world. My favorite kinds are long, light, and swingy. You can layer cardigans over vests for an even more interesting look!

A Few Last Tips:

  • If you go for a monochromatic look, pick different shades. Black on black is fine, even if your blacks don’t match – just make it look intentional!
  • Don’t forget your legs! A cute look for winter is wearing a dress or skirt with tights and boots, with just a hint of sock peering over the boots.
  • Forget what you know about what colours and patterns go together or don’t. Do what works for you. You love orange and pink together? Go for it! Just work it, girl!

Sari – in my personal opinion, I don’t like it very much. But if you love the look, rock it anyway! Everything looks good when you wear it with confidence! :)

Thanks so much for following up with my suggestion! I was really excited to see this pop up on my google reader, and the article is so helpful! Especially now that it’s getting colder and I need to start layering to keep warm.
