As much as we would all love to have a weekly or monthly trip to the spa, the reality of a college girl’s budget simply doesn’t allow this luxury. Fortunately, you can pick up everything you need to whip up decadent beauty treatments at the same time as you buy your cereal. Check out these homemade beauty recipes that you can make with ingredients from the kitchen, and pamper yourself without the guilt.

Body Scrub

Before you get in the shower, take 2 tbsp of olive oil, and 1 tbsp of hot water and mix them together in a small bowl. Add 2 tbsp of coarse sea salt, or sugar (whatever you have on hand). Now, pop in the shower as normal, so your pores can open up in the warm water. Before you get out, rub the body scrub all over your body skin in a circular motion, focusing on dry areas, but avoid your face—this scrub can be too harsh for delicate facial. Avoid to sink in for about a minute before rinsing off. When you get out, pat your skin dry gently with a clean towel, and enjoy your deliciously silky skin.

Oil-Busting Face Mask

If you bought one-too-many bananas and now you’ve got an overripe one on your hands, this is a great way to use it. Again in a small bowl, mush up the banana with the back of a spoon, add 1 tbsp of honey, and a couple drops of the juice from a citrus fruit (lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit—whatever you have). Mix well and then apply all over your bare face. It feels a little gross at first, so you only have to keep it on as long as you can stand it, but I recommend 15 minutes to get the best results. Rinse off with warm water until all the mask is removed, then rinse with cool water to shut your pores and keep your skin smooth, matte, and beautiful all day.

Thirsty-Hair Conditioner

Get out your small bowl (again) and throw in a whole egg, 1 tsp of olive oil, and ¾ cup of warm water. Mix well and store in the fridge until you’re ready to shower. After washing your hair, apply the conditioner to the ends, and slowly work it up the shaft of your hair, raking your fingers through to apply it evenly. Leave on for 1 minute or so, and then rinse out completely for soft, naturally healthy hair.

Sweet-Scented Serum

For this one you need one ingredient from the kitchen, and one from the bathroom which you may already hair: hair smoothing serum. Take a small drop of serum in your palms and rub your hands together to warm it up. Then, sprinkle a small amount of cinnamon onto the serum, then spread through the ends of your hair. The cinnamon soaks up some of the serum, so it’s not too greasy, and adds a great scent that lasts all day while taming fly-aways. (Note: the cinnamon won’t look so great on very light hair colours, but you can try icing sugar instead)

Leafy Relief

Forget putting cucumbers over your eyes: lettuce is where it’s at! Take several large, clean leaves of romaine lettuce and run them under warm water. Lay them over your entire face, then place a hot wash cloth on top of the lettuce. Relax and allow the lettuce to sit for several minutes, then rinse your face. Lettuce contains few nutrients, but contains sulphur, silicon, and phosphorus: minerals that can help make your skin even, smooth, and healthy.
