Summer is winding down and the weather is getting a little more spotty. If you’re stuck with a cool or rainy evening or afternoon, why not take in a great end-of-summer movie? Go online and check out your local cinema for showtimes, and see if they have a cheap night. Most cinemas do (the ones around here are Tuesday nights, and tickets are half price), and it’ll give you more money for popcorn! Here are my three picks for a great end-of-summer flick:

Eat, Pray, Love

Ok, I haven’t read the book yet, but I grabber a copy today after seeing the movie this past week! The story follows Liz Gilbert, a 30-something divorcee who is disenchanted with the way her life has ended up. To remedy this, she embarks on a year-long journey across three countries (Italy, India, and Bali) to learn about life, love, and being on her own. Whether you’ve read the book already or not, this movie is definitely worth checking out, just don’t go on an empty stomach!

The Switch

I have a soft spot for awkward, neurotic, dry-witted guy characters, but they rarely get the lead. Luckily, I get my awkward-hot fix in this movie with the hilarious Jason Bateman who plays Wally, a hypochondriac, neurotic bff to Kassie, played by Jennifer Aniston. When Kassie decides she’s tired of waiting for the right guy/time/situation to have a baby and chooses artificial insemination, Wally is less-than-thrilled. However, in a drunken stupor Wally ends up swapping the juice for his own “ingredient” and romantic hilarity ensues. I was surprised by how this movie avoided being silly and cheesy, opting instead to be heartwarming and adorable! Bonus: it’s funny enough that your guy will like it too, at least more than Eat, Pray, Love.

Going the Distance

Even though this movie isn’t out yet, I have a feeling it’s going to be a winner. Who can turn down He’s Just Not That Into You veterans Drew Barrymore and Justin Long in a film that follows the cute young couple after they’ve already fallen in love. Drew’s character, Erin, has to move to California early in their relationship, but rather than being ‘practical’ and breaking up, the couple decides to give a long distance relationship a go. For college girls who often face long-distance relationships for at least part of the year, this movie is the perfect end-of-summer treat to remind us that love is sometimes worth the fight.

What Do You Think?

What are your picks for end-of-summer flicks? Have you seen either of my first two picks? Do you plan to see any? Let me know what you think in a comment or forum post!
