As we go forward through our college years, ours summers continually get shorter and busier as time goes by. But it’s still summer – it’s still your time! Why not do something with it, something new, that could add new depth to your life? Read on for a few ways you can take hold of your life this summer and mold it into something new and exciting.

Do something you have never done before.

Learn something new! Take that dance lesson, start learning how to speak a new language, or cook a new recipe. Your quality of life increases with every new adventure that challenges you and broadens your conceptual framework. Even something as small as trying a new class at the gym can open doors that you may not even have known were there before.

Take a social media vacation.

Or a complete exit, if you’re brave enough. Getting off of Facebook and TikTok has been rewarding in more ways than I could have ever imagined. With less distractions in the background, I spend much more time in the present. I spend much more time actually living. Unplug yourself and live for yourself! I promise you that the friends you “need” social media for to keep in touch with will still be there, and you may even forge deeper relationships with them since you’re off the internet grid.

Write.

Write anything you want. Write for yourself, write prose, poetry, short stories, long stories, even an autobiography or biography on someone who inspires you. Writing is a process, a journey in which your true self will be revealed along the way. Writing can be one of the most challenging and one of the most rewarding activities that you can engage in, and it can become a creative outlet that unleashes sides of you that may have been lying dormant.

Get lost in a bookstore.

Read! Reading is not only a great way to become a better writer, but it is also a quintessential part of learning something new or exploring a field that may have been previously overlooked in your studies or realms of interest. Let yourself wander without purpose down the many aisles of books, browsing different subjects, and when something catches your eye it is important to run with it. Trust your intuition and see where your reading adventure can take you.
