Why wait until halloween for a fun glow in the dark treat that also works under a black light? So whether you’re planning a costume themed party or having a rave, cupcakes or other baked treats with glow in the dark frosting might just be the highlight of your event.

What you need

(serving size is enough frosting to frost 24 cupcakes)

  • 24 prepared and cooled cupcakes
  • 7 cups of powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar)
  • 1 cup of vegetable shortening
  • 1 teaspoon of clear vanilla extract
  • 5 tablespoons of tonic water or diet tonic water, 1 cup of chilled tonic water
  • chocolate chips
  • Neon food color
  • 1 cup of boiling water
  • .3 ounce package of lime gelatin (orange works too)

Preparation

  1. Add the powdered sugar, shortening, vanilla, and 3 tablespoons of tonic water into a large mixing bowl
  2. Beat the mixture on a low speed until blended well, sugar should be dissolved
  3. Add the last 2 tablespoons as needed to allow frosting to reach a piping consistency
  4. Mix at a high speed for another minute until light and fluffy
  5. In a separate bowl, place half of the white frosting
  6. Add neon food coloring to the frosting until it reaches the desired color, either orange or green depending on the gelatin you chose
  7. Smear the colored frosting onto the cupcakes and place in the freezer for about 30 minutes
  8. Then smear the white frosting from the separate bowl on half of the cupcakes
  9. Add two chocolate chips, and the ghost cupcakes are done!
  10. After the colored cupcakes have frozen, prepare the gelatin by adding 1 cup of boiling water to the gelatin mix
  11. Stir for several minutes and then add the 1 cup of chilled tonic water
  12. Transfer to a tupperware or large container that would allow you to dip the cupcakes into the mixture
  13. Keep gelatin in an ice bath, stirring occasionally so that the gelatin is cool but not set, about 5 to 10 minutes
  14. When the gelatin is cool, take a few cupcakes out of the freezer at a time and dip into the gelatin upside down so that you can submerge the frosting but NOT the cake, but it’s ok if it drips
  15. Return the dipped cupcakes into the freezer for a few minutes to allow the gelatin to set, and then re-dip
  16. For best results, dip each cupcake 4 to 6 times
  17. Refrigerate until you are ready to serve to keep the gelatin set, and then place them under a black light to see the glow!

And you’re ready to display your glowing cupcakes next to the ghost ones! The perfect sweet party platter for a devilish occasion.
