Certain expectations develop once enrolled into a Christian university. However, upon arriving on campus this semester as a freshman at my Christian-rooted college, there were a lot of things I didn’t see coming. Here’s a little heads up for those future admitted students.

1. Parties Actually Exist.

I was told coming to this university that the parties would be here if I went seeking them. Surprisingly, there was very little seeking to be done. Upperclassmen throw social gatherings at their apartments almost every weekend, and you don’t have to look too far for an invite.

The parties may be a bit smaller than the norm at other universities, but even though we have a “dry campus”, there is still a lot of alcohol. If the party scene isn’t your thing, then that’s fine! There’s countless other activities to do on campus. Not everyone is an obsessed party-going young adult… but they are definitely there.

2. People Are Getting Engaged Left And Right.

Maybe it’s out of the guilt some Christians feel about having pre-marital sex, but everywhere I turn, somebody is getting a ring put on her finger. There are even a few freshmen girls who are engaged to their high school sweethearts at home! It’s crazy!

There’s nothing wrong with committing to the special someone when you find him or her, but I certainly wasn’t expecting to see this many diamonds being flaunted!

3. The Push For Diversity Is Stronger Than Ever.

Because the university is centered around a single religion, the school does a lot to promote the diversity in race and religion that we do have.

Although a large percentage of our school is Christian, we do have a solid amount of students who come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

With the huge push for promoting diversity, it allows for a lot of great learning experiences to jump outside your comfort zone and learn about people with different beliefs than you.

This is a summary of my life at a Christian University which has been quite an experience. I hope these small yet crucial discoveries from my freshman year have inspired you.

What Do You Think:

What is the primary religion on your campus? Does it have a huge bearing on campus life?

The party thing doesn’t surprise me too much. People still want to have fun even if they are at a religious college. And the engagement makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

I am surprised about non-christians being at christian schools. I could see a few here and there for certain academic reasons, but you make it sound much larger than that.

Oh, these ring so true of my Catholic college. I wouldn’t say that everyone was getting engaged, but the push for diversity was especially there; it actually brought up a lot of questions about the university’s identity and how much religion was actually getting exposed to students.

And yeah, parties definitely happened… But there were tons of other ways to have fun too!
