Once in a while, every girl needs a day off from work, class, and everything else – a mental health day, if you will.  Like many of you, my life is super-busy too, and I cherish any day I get off, especially in the summer.  I spend the whole day with friends, outside by the pool, but what happens when that one, precious day off turns out to be rainy?  Here are some ideas to get you started making the most out of your rainy free day, but still allow you to go to bed early and get a good nights rest before your next (probably busy) day.

Movies and Books

Watching a movie or reading a book is a perfect way to spend a day where you’re stuck inside.  Grab some friends and pick a few movies that you’ve never seen, but always wanted to.  Make a huge bucket of popcorn and enjoy.  Classic girl movies are good ones for rainy days, like Breakfast at Tiffany’sPride and Prejudice, or Pretty Woman.  If no friends are available, start on that book everyone has been telling you to read.  I just finished Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert because I wanted to read it before the movie came out.  Order Chinese food in, cuddle up on the couch, or sit on your porch if you have one, and enjoy the book while listening to the rain – you’d be surprised at how relaxed you are afterward!

Make Something

With classes starting up soon, many of you are getting ready to move back into college.  Whether it be a dorm, sorority house, or apartment, decorations are essential.  Use your rainy day to make something for your room next year!  Painting is an easy one:  go get a wooden picture frame or wooden letters for your initials, a few bottles of acrylic paint, and a varnish.  Then, paint away!  When you’re done, just put one coat of varnish to prevent the paint from getting sticky, and you’re good to go.  Scrapbooking is another great, easy craft.  I am an avid scrapbooker, and it is very easy to do. Why not start a scrapbook of all the amazing memories you’ve been making this summer?

Cook

Recipes are great. Whether you want to make something sweet ,or try a new recipe for dinner, a rainy day is a great opportunity to hit the grocery store with a new recipe and cook for your family, roommates, boyfriend, or just yourself.  AllRecipes.com has great search options that allow you to find what you’re in the mood for.  They also list cook time, but since it is your first time cooking the recipe, I would add 15 minutes to that time.  Last time I looked for recipes, I tried to find quick ones so I could learn how to make tasty new meals on the run in the future.

Organize

If you feel like being productive on your day off, organizing your closet or desk can be relaxing and definitely makes you feel prepared the next day.  You’ll be much more inspired to pick a cute outfit, or plan out a study schedule, when you have a neat workspace and organized room.  Kaleigh just did a post recently on how to organize your closet, so you can use that as a guide.  As for your desk, minimize things that sit on the top.  Limit them to your computer, a lamp and possibly a pen holder or something.  Put everything else into drawers or bins under your desk.  Staples, Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Target have all kinds of great, cheap containers and supplies to help.

Spa Day

The obvious option is going to the spa.  Stay out of the rain, and treat yourself by getting a massage or a facial.  It is even more fun if you can go with your best friend.  If you want to save some money, go to a local salon for a mani/pedi.  You’ll feel pretty, even in your pajamas, with your toes painted.  The summer nail polish trends are super fun, bright and easy-going colors like electric blue, bright pink, and turquoise.  For fall, golds, maroons, and navys will be in, so when it gets into September, be sure to try them out.  My only advice about this is to make sure you go to a nail salon that has been recommended or has a good reputation.  The last thing you want is to go somewhere that isn’t clean, and get some sort of fungus! (Ew.)
