Even Prince Harry knows the importance of giving back. Sometimes in life you just want to give something back. Whether you feel obligated or feel like you have something more to give to others than you do in your daily life. Either way giving back is a great activity because it helps others and at the end of the day, it will make you feel like you’ve made a difference in the world. Here are some suggestions of how to get started in giving service.

Go Local

Go to your local soup kitchen and help serve meals or participate in a food drive. Or you could contact the activities director at a nursing home or assisted living facility and see if you can help with any upcoming activities. Another option would be to visit your local library and see if they have any reading or special events you could participate in as a volunteer.

Disaster Relief

You might not have money to donate, but there is always a need for care packages and other supplies both locally and overseas. I have often seen church groups put these things together, and even if you are not a member of a particular church group, I am sure they would love the extra hands!

Support the Troops

If you know someone serving, send them your love through letters. Many organizations are intricately involved in supporting the troops. They can easily be found via a quick online search.

Donate Blood

A simple but life saving donation. Blood banks may be short on your type of blood, so if you can, donate on a regular basis.

Tutor

A lot of colleges offer free tutoring sessions. Sometimes the tutors are paid, sometimes they are not. Either way, this is a great way to help others, especially if you like to teach. And if you tutor a subject you really enjoy, perhaps a foreign language, it would be a great option to meet people with similar interests!

Do It Yourself

If you are feeling more ambitious take things into your own hands. Do you see a problem that could be fixed? Or do you have something you are passionate about? Well you can start today by taking action. The first steps would involve defining what you think needs changed and then start organizing and networking to get your project done!

Bonus Suggestion: Serve a Mission

Are you passionate about traveling? Do you have the desire to go to a third world country and help children and families with basic human needs? Serving a mission may be the perfect experience for you, and would also look good on a resume! You would have to dedicate a few weeks or even a few months to such a project. A great place to scout out different organizations that focus on helping others is your schools Career Fair.
